To be certified or not to be certified?: DEBATE

With uncertainty in job market and with no "definite word" from campus recruiters students are bit worried but have started exploring possible ways forward. One of the paths they wish to explore is earning some certification such as SAP,DB2, CCNE to name the few. In this context, we have initiated a debate and consider the following questions.
  • Should one go for certification at all ?
  • If so when, while he/she is still a student or after graduation?
  • Which certification to be considered ?
SAP
DB2
CCNE etc
Kindly share your views, opinions, comments and recommendations so that junior can make an "informed" decision.

  1. Yes having Certification is Good but I feel one should try out for Internship programs in certain companies where they provide training and also students will get to know the work cultutre and exposed to the industrial training. And they will get to know how technology is actually used in building the products.

  3. As a fresher it adds very less.
For ex we had DB2 and WSAD certifications during 2000-01 in college but now I dont remember anything from that and didnt add an value to me till now.

Certification adds value when u have proper experience in any field.
And this certification should not be just for namesake,by going through dumps and passing the same .One should spend enough time on the curriculum and then give the test.
Reason is after certification you market yourself based on these, and when u get hired or got any contract you have to prove yourself there.

  4. Some have already given the information that certification with experience are of value. I would definitely agree to that. However, there are areas where students can explore to get certified. For example, SAP BI, Oracle Apps are good certifications to have. But the catch is, students need to pay attention to the domain part of the training as well. Domain knowledge plus technical skills would always be a good sell. There are training institutes which provide such kind of training and certification. I would suggest, (similar to other posts) that students should first get couple of years of experience and then look at certifications.

  5. Pros:
Certification is good for fresher/experienced people to be distinguished among crowd.
They definitely add value as long as you really mean it. You should really exhibit the skillset during written test/interviews.
In job certification is good for your appraisals, growth, bonus etc.
If you are a visionary, and you are determined to make your career in a specific domain of interest then you can go for the certifications. They definitely add value to your resume.

    Cons:
For fresher certifications mean specializations. They might restrict job opportunities only to those areas.
Fresher may find certifications as expensive.

    Other thoughts:
Certifications are valid for only 1-2 years. After that you have to re-certify. It could benefit if you get certified when you are going for job search.
